LandCruiser diesel performance decline

I have a 2013 Toyota LandCruiser with a diesel engine. Recently, I've observed a decline in performance accompanied by higher fuel consumption. The engine occasionally stalls at idle, and the check engine light is illuminated. I've also noticed smoke when accelerating. Based on my research, it seems like the mass air flow (MAF) meter might be defective. Has anyone experienced similar issues?

Hey, I also drive a LandCruiser, though I can't recall the exact year. I had almost the exact same symptoms a while back – the poor fuel economy was driving me nuts, and the stalling was just plain embarrassing. I remember cleaning the MAF sensor, which helped a bit temporarily, but the light kept coming back on. Did you try cleaning the sensor already?

Thanks for your reply. I have not yet attempted cleaning the sensor. What were the long-term effects after cleaning the sensor? Did the check engine light disappear permanently?

Cleaning it only gave me a brief respite, maybe a week or two. The check engine light came back, and the symptoms gradually returned. Honestly, after messing with it for a bit, I just took it to a workshop. They confirmed it was the MAF sensor and replaced it. Solved everything. Probably best to get it properly diagnosed.

I appreciate the advice. Based on your experience, I will take it to a trusted workshop for a diagnosis and potential MAF sensor replacement. Thank you for sharing your experience; it has been most helpful. The repair eventually cost me 365€.
