Lexus ES Hybrid EGR Valve Issue

I'm having issues with my 2013 Lexus ES hybrid (140,658 km). I've noticed a significant reduction in engine power, the check engine light is on, and there's smoke when accelerating. The engine is running rough, fuel consumption is higher, and there's jerking when accelerating plus a loud hissing sound. Could it be an EGR valve issue or a vacuum leak? Could a clogged catalytic converter cause similar symptoms, especially the smoke and power loss?

Summary of the thread

The 2013 Lexus ES hybrid is experiencing reduced engine power, a check engine light, smoke during acceleration, rough running, increased fuel consumption, jerking, and a loud hissing sound. These symptoms suggest a potential issue with the EGR valve or a vacuum leak, with a clogged catalytic converter also being a possible cause. The rough idle further indicates an EGR valve problem, which can lead to performance issues and affect emissions. It is recommended to inspect for carbon buildup around the valve or seek professional diagnosis to avoid further complications.

Sounds like a dodgy EGR valve, especially with the smoke and rough running. Have you noticed any changes in how it idles? A faulty EGR can cause all sorts of weird problems, affecting emissions tests and performance. Could also be linked to the recirculation system. Maybe check for any obvious signs of damage or blockage around the valve itself?

Thanks for the quick reply! The idle does seem a bit rougher than usual. When you say 'blockage around the valve,' what exactly should I be looking for? Is it something I can visually inspect, or would I need to take it apart? I'm a bit of a novice when it comes to car repairs, so any specific pointers would be greatly appreciated!

Okay, with the rough idle too, it really points to the EGR valve. Visually, you're looking for carbon buildup – it'll be pretty obvious, like black gunk. You might be able to see some around the valve without taking it completely apart, but it depends on the engine layout. Honestly, if you're not super confident, it might be best to get it checked by a workshop. They can properly diagnose it and avoid you causing any further issues. EGR problems can mess with your fuel consumption and catalytic converter down the line.

Thanks a lot for the advice! I think you're right, it's probably best if I take it to a workshop to get it properly diagnosed. I really appreciate you confirming my suspicions about the EGR valve. I ended up taking it to a local mechanic, and they confirmed it was a defective EGR valve. The repair cost me about 355€, but at least the car is running smoothly again!
