The linkage feels fine, nothing obviously loose. Is a transmission sensor something I can check myself, or am I better off taking it to a shop?

Based on what you're saying and my experience, it sounds like the same problem. The transmission sensor requires special tools, better let a shop handle it. I ended up paying around 1000€ to get it fixed. It could be a defective control unit indeed. Don't risk making it worse.

Thanks, that's helpful. I'll book it in with a workshop. I appreciate the advice.

I had similar transmission issues with my LFA. Not sure about the build year, but the symptoms sound familiar. Does it feel like the gear linkage is loose or the shift lock is engaged when it shouldn't be? It could also be a faulty transmission sensor causing the problem.
