Oil sludge, huh? I hadn't considered that. Was the fix complicated? Did you end up replacing the VANOS unit?

Nah, didn't have to replace the VANOS thankfully. But the oil sludge was definitely the culprit. Still, better get it checked out properly. Could also be the timing chain. A workshop will know better.

Thanks for the insight! Took it back to the mechanic, and it was indeed the VANOS. They replaced a faulty solenoid valve. Total cost: 250€. Running smooth now!

Sounds familiar. Had a similar issue with my BMW a while back engine misfire, check engine light, and the whole shebang. For me it was oil sludge messing with the variable timing. Have you checked for that?
