Yes, I scanned it and it returned a fault code related to the active air flap. Does that confirm the electromechanism is defective?

Yep, that pretty much confirms it. The electromechanism on those air flaps is a known weak point. Unfortunately, it's not usually repairable; you'll probably need to replace the entire assembly. I would take it to a reputable workshop.

Thanks for the confirmation and advice. I took it to the workshop and they replaced the air flap assembly. The final bill was 590€ but the check engine light is now off and the overheating issue is resolved.

Sounds like a plausible theory. A faulty active air flap could definitely cause those symptoms. Have you scanned the car for any fault codes? That would give you a solid starting point to confirm if it's actually the air flaps.
