Lexus RC check engine light fuel consumption

Hey, I've got a 2017 Lexus RC with a gasoline engine that's giving me fits. The check engine light popped on recently, and I've noticed my fuel consumption has gone up noticeably. I'm thinking it might be related to the inlet VANOS mechanics. I'm guessing either a faulty camshaft solenoid valve or a power supply issue, but I am not sure how to check it. Has anyone experienced something similar?

Whoa, that sounds familiar! I had a similar problem with my RC, though the symptoms were a bit more subtle at first. VANOS, or Variable Valve Timing, is a system that optimizes engine performance. The camshaft solenoid valves control the oil flow to the VANOS actuators, which adjust the camshaft timing. A faulty solenoid can definitely trigger the check engine light and affect fuel economy. It might also be a good idea to check for oil sludge, which can gunk up the system and cause problems.

Thanks for the quick response! Did you end up diagnosing it yourself, or did you take it to a shop? I'm comfortable with basic repairs, but I don't have a ton of experience with variable timing systems. Also, do you know how to check for oil sludge?

I ended up taking mine to a trusted mechanic. Diagnosing VANOS issues can be tricky without the right tools and experience. You could try checking the oil for any signs of excessive sludge – look for a thick, black, tar-like consistency instead of a clean, amber color. However, for a proper diagnosis of the VANOS solenoid or its power supply, a workshop visit is probably the best bet. It is better to be safe than sorry.

Thanks a lot for the advice! I took it to a local shop, and you were spot on about the VANOS solenoid. They replaced it, and the check engine light is gone, and my fuel consumption is back to normal. The bill came to around 250€ including labor. Appreciate the help!
