Looking for help with problems with VW Passat Diesel 2014: stuttering, increased consumption and black smoke

Hi guys! I'm having problems with my 2014 VW Passat Diesel. It stutters when accelerating, drives erratically, the engine cuts out, it stinks from the exhaust and emits black smoke when accelerating. It also consumes more fuel and the indicator light comes on. I suspect that the fuel injection pressure may not be correct. Do any of you have experience with this and can give me a few tips? How did you get the problem solved in the workshop? Any tips are welcome! Thanks in advance!

Summary of the thread

A 2014 VW Passat Diesel is experiencing stuttering, erratic driving, engine cutouts, black smoke from the exhaust, and increased fuel consumption. The suspected cause is incorrect fuel injection pressure, possibly due to a faulty fuel pressure regulator. A similar issue was resolved in another vehicle by replacing the fuel pressure regulator, suggesting this as a potential solution. The recommendation is to take the car to a garage for inspection and repair.

Did this summary help you solve your problem?

Hi, I had a similar problem with my 2012 VW Golf Diesel. I would describe myself as someone with some car experience. I drive to the garage where they then found a faulty fuel pressure regulator. The repair cost me 255 euros at the time. Maybe it could be the fuel pressure regulator (KDR) in your car too? Could you give me some more information about your car, e.g. how many kilometers have you driven so far and when was the last time you had an inspection? I might be able to help you with more details.

Hey, thanks for your reply! My Passat now has 189425 km on the clock and the last inspection was just over a year ago. The fuel pressure regulator could indeed be the problem, as the symptoms are very similar. I'll take it to the garage and hope that it won't be too expensive. Thanks again for the tip!

No problem, glad to hear I was able to help! With the mileage, it could well be that the fuel pressure regulator is the culprit. This was the case with my Golf at around 200,000 km. Since you haven't had an inspection in over a year, it might be time to make another appointment anyway. As you say, take it to the garage and have the fuel pressure checked. I hope for your sake that the repair stays the same and that no other problems arise. I can't guarantee that it's exactly the same in your case, but the symptoms fit together pretty well. And if you're lucky, it might even be a bit cheaper than mine. I'll keep my fingers crossed for you! Give us an update when you know more. You're welcome and good luck!
