Malibu EGR Valve Issue

My 2008 Chevy Malibu (gasoline engine, 238,255 km) has lost power, the check engine light is on, and it's guzzling gas. When I accelerate, the engine chokes, sometimes there's smoke, and it idles rough. Plus, there's a loud hissing noise. Could a stuck EGR valve cause these issues? I'm worried about the emissions test.

I had similar problems with my old Nissan Altima: reduced engine power and a check engine light. Has your fuel economy changed? Is the rough idling constant or intermittent?

Yeah, the fuel economy has tanked, and I'm filling up more often. The rough idling is pretty constant, worse when the engine is cold. Was it definitely the EGR valve in your Nissan, and did it cause the hissing noise too?

The fuel economy drop and constant rough idle sound like the EGR valve issue I had. I didn't have the hissing noise, though. I'm not a mechanic, so I can't say for sure about your Malibu, but those symptoms were what I had, and the shop immediately said the EGR valve was defective. Maybe take it to a mechanic to check.
