Thanks! That sounds similar. How did you figure out it was the gears in the transfer case? Did you do any tests or inspections?

The shifting got worse. I took it to a shop, and they said it was excessive gear wear in the transfer case. I needed a transfer case oil change and some parts replaced. You should get it checked out by a professional.

Thanks for sharing! I appreciate the advice. I'll book an appointment with a local shop to inspect the transfer case. Hopefully, it's not too serious, but I'm prepared. It will probably cost around 330€.

I've got a Malibu too, though I'm not sure about the year. I had similar shifting issues. Have you checked the transfer case oil for wear or contamination? Defective gears in the transfer case could cause that.
