Marea gear shift indicator problem

Hi, I've got a 2007 Fiat Marea diesel with only 48918 km on the clock, and I'm having a weird issue with the gear shift indicator. Basically, the display in the speedometer is dead, and it's causing all sorts of problems. I can't engage the gears properly, the automatic transmission is shifting all over the place, sometimes it slips, and I'm getting some nasty grinding noises. I even hooked it up to a code reader and got an error stored in the memory. Could it be a sensor problem or something related to the gear selector?

Summary of the thread

A 2007 Fiat Marea diesel is experiencing issues with the gear shift indicator, leading to improper gear engagement, erratic automatic transmission shifting, slipping, and grinding noises. A diagnostic tool revealed a fault code related to the gear selector position sensor. The problem is likely linked to the transmission control unit or its wiring. It is recommended to have a professional workshop inspect and potentially replace the control unit to resolve the issue.

Good day. Based on the symptoms you've described, it appears the issue lies within the control unit itself. Are you able to read any specific fault codes using your diagnostic tool? Have you checked the wiring harness and connectors to the transmission control module for any signs of damage or corrosion?

Thanks for the quick reply. Yes, I got a fault code related to the gear selector position sensor. I did have a quick look at the wiring, but I didn't see anything obvious. Where exactly is the transmission control module located? Is it easy to access?

The fault code and your description indeed point towards the control unit. Without further specialist tools I suggest visiting your local workshop for the repairs.

Thanks for the advice! I suspected it might be the control unit. I'll take it to a local garage to get this sorted. They quoted me around 1000€ for the work, which they say includes replacing the defective control unit. Hopefully, that will fix the shifting problem.
