Marea rear window heating issue

Okay, so I'm losing my mind over this. I have a 2004 Fiat Marea, diesel engine, and the rear window heating is completely dead. The light on the switch comes on, but nothing happens. I plugged in my OBD reader and it shows an error stored in the error memory, but the really weird thing is that the windshield heating doesn't seem to be working properly either. Could this be related to a bad earth somewhere? It's like when you try to jump start a car with a bad connection - everything goes haywire! I'm at a loss. Has anyone else had this?

Summary of the thread

A 2004 Fiat Marea owner experienced a problem with the rear window heating not functioning, despite the switch light being on. The issue was suspected to be related to a bad earth connection. However, it was suggested that a weak battery could be the cause, as it might not supply enough power for the heating elements. After testing, the battery was found to be heavily discharged and was replaced, resolving the issue with the rear window heating.

Did this summary help you solve your problem?

Sounds familiar. I have a Fiat Marea too, and I had a similar problem last winter with the rear window heater. Check your battery. A weak battery can cause all sorts of electrical gremlins. Is it the original one?

Aha! That's interesting... The battery is quite old, I think. So, if the battery is weak, it could stop the rear window heater from working? It seems strange, like trying to run a marathon on an empty stomach. It makes sense in a weird way. But why would it also affect the windshield heating?

Yeah, a weak battery can definitely cause the rear window heating to fail. The heating coil draws a lot of power, and if the battery can't supply enough, it just won't work. Regarding the windshield, it might be a related issue due to low voltage affecting other components. I'd recommend getting the battery tested. If it's bad, replace it and see if the problem goes away. Otherwise, head to a workshop.

Thanks for the tip! I did get the battery tested, and you were spot on! Heavily discharged and almost dead. Replaced it, and now the rear window heating is working perfectly again. Cost me 290€ for the battery and installation, but at least I can see out the back now! Cheers!
