Marea Transmission Problems

My 2002 Fiat Marea, gasoline engine, with 180416 km is having transmission issues. Shifting isn't possible via the paddle shifters, the gearbox slips and shifts uncleanly, and there are grinding noises. The paddle shifters have a slow response, and the gearbox is now in emergency mode with an error stored. I suspect the transmission control unit. Similar problems anyone?

Summary of the thread

The 2002 Fiat Marea is experiencing transmission issues, including unresponsive paddle shifters, slipping, grinding noises, and emergency mode activation with an error stored. The suspected cause is a faulty transmission control unit (TCU). A suggested solution is to inspect the wiring harness for loose connections or damage, as this can cause similar symptoms. A workshop confirmed the TCU as the problem, leading to a repair estimate of around 1000€.

That sounds eerily familiar. I had a similar experience with my old Volvo V70. The symptoms you describe mirror what I went through, although it was the automatic transmission in my case. Have you checked the wiring harness to the transmission control unit? Sometimes, a loose connection can cause similar issues.

Thanks for the quick response. You mentioned a wiring harness issue. Where exactly should I be looking, and what am I looking for? Is there a common point of failure for the harness in the Volvo, maybe something analogous in the Marea?

The wiring harness in my Volvo was chafing against the chassis, causing intermittent disconnections. It's like a faulty wire in a lamp - sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn't. While I can't pinpoint the exact location in your Fiat, I'd suggest a thorough visual inspection of the harness leading to the TCU. If you lack the tools or experience, it is likely best to take it to a workshop for a proper diagnosis. The error code stored could also point them to the problem

I appreciate the input. It seems like the transmission control unit is indeed the culprit. I took it to a workshop, and they confirmed the diagnosis. Repair cost will be around 1000€. Thanks again for the advice.
