No visible external oil leakage, surprisingly. I haven't yet drained the gear oil for inspection, but I will now. Presuming I discover metallic detritus, would you agree with my suspicion of defective gears?

If you find metal in the gear oil, you're almost certainly looking at internal gear damage. Given the symptoms and mileage, it's a strong possibility. Honestly, at that point, unless you're extremely confident with transmissions, you're best off getting a workshop to take a look. Rebuilding those transfer cases can be tricky.

Sounds rough! Transfer case oil wear on a Master isn't unheard of. Gearbox slip is nasty. Are you seeing any oil leakage around the transfer case? What does the drained gear oil look like – any metal filings or excessive discoloration? That's a telltale sign of internal wear.
