Matiz oil pressure problem
Summary of the thread
A 2008 Chevrolet Matiz is experiencing an oil pressure problem, indicated by an intermittent warning lamp and loud mechanical noises from the engine. The initial checks showed no oil leakage and a proper oil level, leading to suspicion of a faulty oil pressure sensor. However, further discussion suggests that the issue might be a defective oil pump, as the noises indicate insufficient lubrication, which could cause serious engine damage. The recommended solution is to have the oil pump checked and repaired by a workshop to prevent further damage.

Thanks for the quick reply! Unfortunately, my Matiz doesn't have an oil pressure gauge, only the warning lamp. I'm using 5W-30 oil, as recommended in the manual, and the last oil change was about 8000 km ago. Could a worn-out oil pump really cause such a sudden drop in pressure? I thought they usually fail gradually.

Oil pumps can fail suddenly, especially if debris gets sucked into them and damages the internal gears. Based on your symptoms, I strongly suspect a defect in the oil pump. Those noises indicate that the engine isn't getting enough oil, which could lead to serious damage, like a ruined crankshaft and corresponding connecting rod bearings and camshaft bearings. You need to get that checked by a workshop ASAP. Continuing to drive it like that will only make things worse. The oil pressure sensor only indicates when the pressure is too low, it does nothing to solve the issue itself.

OK, thanks for the advice! I took it to the workshop and you were right. It was indeed the oil pump. The repair cost me 755€, all included. Hopefully, this will solve the problem for good.

I had a similar issue with my Matiz. The symptoms sound very familiar. Did you check the oil pressure gauge, if your car has one? Those loud mechanical noises are concerning and most likely caused by insufficient lubrication. It could be a faulty oil pump. What kind of oil are you using and when was your last oil change?
