Matrix ABS Fault

I'm having a speed signal fault with my 2002 Hyundai Matrix diesel. The ABS lamp lights up intermittently, I've got traction problems, and the ABS seems to have failed. The car has done 164198 km. Could this be an ECM malfunction or a sensor issue? The odometer is working fine, which is strange. Does a defective control unit seem likely?

Summary of the thread

A 2002 Hyundai Matrix diesel is experiencing an intermittent ABS lamp, traction problems, and apparent ABS failure, despite the odometer functioning correctly. The issue could stem from a malfunctioning ECM or a faulty sensor, with a correlation noted at speeds above 50 km/h. Suggestions include checking the wiring harness and connections for corrosion or damage, and considering the ABS module as a likely culprit if no sensor faults are found. The recommendation is to have the vehicle diagnosed at a workshop to confirm the issue and explore repair options.

Sounds nasty. Have you checked the wiring harness and connections to the ABS module? A loose or corroded connection could cause intermittent signal problems, but wouldn't necessarily trigger the odometer. A defective control unit could definitely cause the ABS and traction control issues. Is there any correlation with speed or temperature?

I inspected the wiring harness for damage or corrosion, but I didn't do a continuity test. Given the cost of replacing the ABS module, should I diagnose the sensor integrity first? And yes, there is a correlation with speed. When I go beyond 50 km/h the ABS lamp illuminates.

Given that it happens beyond 50 km/h and you've checked the basics, I'd suspect the ABS module itself. While you could spend more time troubleshooting individual sensors, the symptoms point strongly towards an internal fault in the control unit. You may just need to get it replaced, especially if diagnostics confirm no sensor faults.

Understood. I think the control unit is defective. I'll take it to a workshop for diagnosis and a quote. It sounds like it'll be about 1000€ to repair. Thanks for the help.
