Matrix AC blows hot air

Alright, I'm tearing my hair out! My 2009 Toyota Matrix with a gasoline engine is blowing hot air. The AC is completely dead. The AC light on the dash is on, but no cool air and a warning light popped up. It's throwing an error related to the AC. Could this be the compressor? AC repairs are the worst!

Summary of the thread

A 2009 Toyota Matrix is experiencing an issue where the AC blows hot air, with the AC light on but no cool air produced, and a warning light indicating an error related to the AC. The problem could be due to the AC compressor not engaging, possibly caused by low refrigerant or a defective AC control unit. A professional diagnosis is recommended to check refrigerant levels, clutch engagement, and the control unit to accurately identify and resolve the issue. Ultimately, the problem was confirmed to be a defective AC control unit.

I had a similar problem with my Matrix! Does the AC clutch engage when you turn on the AC? You should be able to hear a click and see the center of the compressor pulley start spinning. Also, have you checked the refrigerant pressure? A low refrigerant level can prevent the compressor from engaging.

Good call on the clutch and refrigerant, thanks! I didn't notice any click, and the center isn't spinning. I don't have a gauge to check the pressure myself, though. Could it really be just low refrigerant? I thought with a warning light, it might be something more serious like the control unit or compressor itself. You think I should just take it in?

Given that the clutch isn't engaging and you're getting a warning light, it does sound like more than just low refrigerant. In my case, the dealership ended up telling me it was the AC control unit, as they said it was defective. If you want to be absolutely sure, get a professional diagnosis. They can check the refrigerant level, clutch engagement, and control unit to pinpoint the problem.

You were spot on! I took it to the shop, and they confirmed it was the AC control unit. Total cost for the repair was around 980€. Thanks for pointing me in the right direction; saved me a lot of guesswork and stress!
