Matrix Battery Drain Defective Sensor
Summary of the thread
A 2010 Hyundai Matrix with a diesel engine is experiencing issues indicative of a heavily discharged battery, such as error messages, weak and flickering lights, and difficulty starting. The problem is suspected to be caused by a defective battery sensor, which can lead to a parasitic drain even when the car is off. The suggested solution is to have the sensor checked and possibly replaced at a workshop, which successfully resolved the issue.

The battery is about three years old. Could a defective battery sensor really cause such a heavy discharge, even when the car is off?

Absolutely! A faulty sensor can keep drawing power even when the engine is off, leading to a dead battery. Based on your symptoms and the battery's age, that sensor is my prime suspect. I'd suggest getting it checked at a workshop; they have the right tools to diagnose it properly.

Thank you for the advice! I took it to the workshop, and you were spot on – it was indeed a defective battery sensor. The repair cost me 315€. Everything seems to be working perfectly now.

Sounds like a real pain. I had similar symptoms in my old car; it turned out to be a bad battery sensor causing a parasitic drain. Is the battery relatively new, or could it be reaching the end of its life?
