Matrix engine overheating air flap issue
Summary of the thread
A 2004 Toyota Matrix is experiencing engine overheating and a check engine light, suspected to be linked to the active air flap system. The issue may stem from a defective electromechanism or a stuck air intake flap motor. Suggested solutions include checking the air intake, ensuring the grille shutter moves freely, and possibly replacing the flap motor if cleaning and lubrication do not resolve the problem.

Thanks. Did you also get a specific fault code related to the air intake or thermal management system? I'm curious if the behavior was identical, pointing to a common failure.

Yes, there was a code related to the flap motor. I tried cleaning and lubricating it, but it needed replacement. If you're not comfortable doing that yourself, I'd suggest taking it to a workshop.

Understood. I will take it to a trusted mechanic for inspection and repair. The estimated cost is 590€. Your experience has been invaluable.

I had something similar happen on my Matrix. Check the air intake and the flap motor itself. If it's stuck, it could cause overheating. Is the grille shutter moving freely? Sometimes they get gunked up.
