Matrix Engine Runs Rough

My 2002 Toyota Matrix with a gasoline engine has a noticeable decline in engine performance. The check engine light is on, and the engine runs rough, jerking upon acceleration. The car has 89160 km. I suspect the engine might be running lean, possibly due to a malfunctioning fuel injector. Any insights or guidance on diagnosing this?

Sounds like you're starving your engine! A lean condition, eh? Could be injectors, but before you tear into that, have you checked for vacuum leaks? Think of it like this: a tiny hole in a straw makes it hard to get your milkshake. Same deal with your intake manifold! Also, when was the last time you cleaned your EGR valve? Worth a peek!

Regarding the vacuum leaks, could you elaborate on the specific areas I should inspect on the intake manifold? Also, it has been quite some time since the EGR valve was last cleaned. What would be the best method to assess if it is indeed contributing to the lean condition?

Alright, so intake manifold wise, check all the hoses connected to it, especially around where they clamp on. Cracks are the enemy! As for the EGR, if it's stuck open, it's like leaving a window open in your house when the AC is on. You can try cleaning it with some carb cleaner, but honestly, with those symptoms, and if you're not super comfortable wrenching, a mechanic might be the best bet to diagnose for sure.

I've decided to consult with a qualified mechanic. After inspection, the fuel injectors were indeed defective, causing the lean condition. The total repair amounted to 515€.
