Summary of the thread
A 2006 Hyundai Matrix with a gasoline engine and 92,825 km on the odometer wouldn't start, and the engine light was on. The initial suspicion was a bad battery connection. Terminals look okay at first glance, but maybe I should disconnect and clean them properly? Could a bad connection really prevent it from starting at all?

Definitely worth a shot. A poor connection can cause all sorts of weird issues, especially with modern cars and their sensitive electronics. If cleaning doesn't fix it, you might want to get a proper diagnostic check. Could be an ECU issue or something else entirely. A workshop would be better suited to determine this.

You were spot on! Cleaned the battery terminals thoroughly, and it started right up. Turns out there was some hidden corrosion. Cost me 155€ at the shop for the repair. Thanks for pointing me in the right direction!

Engine light on and not starting could be a few things. Did you check the battery terminals for corrosion or looseness? I had a similar problem on my old car, turned out one of the cables was barely hanging on.
