Mazda CX5 (2022 Model) Experiencing Performance Issues Likely Linked to Camshaft Adjustment

Metal shavings in oil

Unsteady engine

Check engine light on

Poor fuel economy

Jerking on acceleration

Loss of engine power

Weird engine noise

Valve adjustment noise

Hey! I'm currently having a rough time with my 2022 Mazda CX5 gas engine with a good 292,815 km on it. Seems like it's not behaving the way it should. It started with the check engine light popping up, then I noticed a significant loss in engine power. The engine is also acting real skittish, jerking whenever I try to accelerate. Despite all this, I'm not getting the fuel economy I used to. I swear I can hear a weird noise coming from the engine too, almost like the valve's adjusting or something. And just to top it off, I've found tiny bits of metal in the oil. Now I'm no mechanic, but I suspect it's something do with the camshaft adjustment. Anyone out there faced something similar? I had a not-so-awesome experience with my last mechanic so a bit hesitant to rush back there. I'd love to hear your take on this and your recommendations for trustworthy mechanics. Cheers!

Hey! Sounds like you're dealing with a real headache. I had similar issues with my 2019 Mazda CX9 not long ago. Funnily enough, it turned out to be a defective neck shaft solenoid valve. Symptoms were almost identical, down to the weird noise and metal bits in the oil. The skittishness, drop in power, and the poor fuel economy are telltale signs. The check engine light was just the icing on the cake. Apparently, the camshaft uses the solenoid valve to control the amount of oil flow into the camshaft itself for proper adjustment. When the solenoid is defective or there's a lack of power supply, everything goes a bit out of whack. The engine isn't getting what it needs when it needs it, which would explain the erratic behavior. As for the work that needed to be done to fix it, my mechanic had to replace the faulty solenoid and got the electrical supply back up. He also did a complete oil change, given the metal shavings found, and suggested to keep an eye on the vehicle for a while just to make sure everything is alright. Don't take my word as gospel, but it's definitely a possibility to consider. If you got a different trusted mechanic, just let them take a look at it. Good luck with your CX5!

Hey there! You've got me nodding my head as I read through your response - it seems we're on the same page about the whole camshaft solenoid fiasco. It's a bit reassuring to know I could be on the right path here, though I'm not exactly thrilled about the trouble my CX5 is causing! Quick one, if you don't mind - do you remember how much the fix set you back? I'm keen to get a ballpark idea of the cost so I can budget for it. And since you had it done, have there been any new issues popping up that I should be aware of? Thanks again! Your insight is really appreciated!

Hey! Ah, the cost! I remember it clear as day. The mechanic charged me around 250.00 € to square away the whole thing. That included replacing the wonky neck shaft solenoid valve and getting power supply back on track. Glad to have caught it when I did because, let me tell ya, it pays to have good oil flow into the camshaft! And as for your second question, it's been smooth cruising since the fix. No weird noises, no engine stutters, nothing. The camshaft adjustment issue got addressed when the mechanic attended to the faulty solenoid and, honestly, she's been running like a dream ever since. So, long story short, no new drama to report from my side! I hope you have the same luck with your CX5! Cheers!

Hey there! you're an absolute champ! Really thankful for the detailed breakdown and especially for offering a potential financial outlook for this whole thing. If we're around the same ballpark and it's only gonna set me back around 250.00 €, I reckon I'm gonna be alright. It's also great to hear you haven't had any issues post-fix. Fingers crossed I'll be joining you on that smooth cruising ride once my CX5 is all fixed up. Appreciate all your help. Here's hoping my mechanic visit goes as well as yours. Cheers for taking the time to share your experience – really helped me out a bunch!
