Seeking Advice on 2017 Mazda MX5 Engine Problems and Repair Experience
Summary of the thread
The 2017 Mazda MX5 is experiencing several issues including a lit check engine light, power loss, rough engine running, jerking during acceleration, increased fuel consumption, strange noises, and metal shavings in the oil. The owner suspects a problem with the camshaft adjustment. A similar experience shared by another Mazda owner involved a defective camshaft adjustment cable/plug, which was resolved by replacing the faulty parts. It was suggested to run a full diagnostic check at a professional workshop to pinpoint the exact cause before committing to potentially costly repairs.

Hi there! Thanks for sharing your story, feels like we're on the same boat here. My MX5's on 167181 KM on the odometer. Last service was done about a couple of months ago, with the usual oil, filters, and spark plugs change. But it seems like it didn't do much in terms of this current issue. I'm leaning towards taking it to my local workshop too. Your experience has definitely given me some confidence to do so. Just hoping it won't make a huge dent in my wallet though. Anyway, appreciate your help! Let's see how this goes.

Hey there, no worries at all, happy to share what I can. It does sound like our problems are eerily similar! Considering your mileage and the recent service, I still reckon the Camshaft adjustment could be at fault. I totally get you on the fear of the potential cost. It hit me hard too, but think of it this way - it's better to take a hit now than risking more extensive (and expensive) damage! To give you some peace of mind, I'd definitely recommend asking the workshop to run a full diagnostic check. That way, they can pin down the exact cause of the problem before you commit to any costly repairs. And hey, who knows? You might be in luck and it turns out to be something simpler (and cheaper) than what I had to deal with. Keep me posted! Stay positive!

You're absolutely right, better to face the music now than let it escalate into something I really can't afford. Sure thing, I'll have them run a full diagnostic and figure out what's actually going on. The guessing game can be mentally exhausting sometimes! Appreciate the positive vibes and advice, really provided some peace of mind during this tricky situation. I'll make sure to keep you posted on how it goes. Thanks again. Fingers crossed it's nothing major! Stay safe.

Hey there! I had a similar situation with my 2015 Mazda 3 not so long ago. I might not be your car guru as I only have some experience under my belt, but I can definitely share my slice of the story. I noticed the same symptoms you did and took it down to a reliable local workshop I've been using. They ran some diagnostics and came back saying my Camshaft adjustment cable/plug was defective and they also found some oil there. Yikes! They recommended to replace the defective parts to stop the issue from getting worse, even if it was a bit pricey. I ended up shelling out about 395 Euro for the fix which wasn't easy on my pocket, but it definitely got my car running smooth again and the power was back. Can you tell me more about your vehicle - specifically the mileage and recent service history? It might shed some light on the problem. Looking forward to helping out some more. Don't forget, it's worth getting things checked out professionally!
