Mercedes A Klasse AC Compressor Issue

My 2008 Mercedes A Klasse with a gasoline engine has an AC issue. I suspect the AC compressor has failed. There's an error code, no cooling, the system won't engage, and a warning light is on. Diagnostics suggest a potentially defective AC control unit. The repair is estimated at 980€. Could a refrigerant leak cause this, or is the control unit the more likely culprit? I'm interested in learning more about auto refrigerant and cooling.

I have a similar issue with my Mercedes A Klasse. The air conditioning stopped working, and it was diagnosed as a potential AC compressor issue. I was told it could be a refrigerant leak, and the system shut down to prevent further damage. It might be worth checking the refrigerant levels before assuming the worst. How did you determine it was the air conditioning control unit? Is there a test to rule out other causes?

The diagnosis pointing towards a defective air conditioning control unit was based on the error codes. However, your point regarding a potential refrigerant leak is well-taken. Did your mechanic perform any specific tests to ascertain the root cause before concluding it was the AC compressor? Were there any noticeable signs of a refrigerant leak, such as visible residue or unusual noises?

To be honest, my knowledge of car air conditioning systems is limited. The mechanic initially checked for obvious signs of a refrigerant leak, but I am not sure about specific tests. He mentioned something about pressure testing, but I am unsure if he performed it. He strongly suggested replacing the AC compressor; however, he did mention that a faulty control unit could also be responsible. Given the uncertainties, I suggest a comprehensive evaluation at a reputable workshop.

I appreciate your insights. I have decided to heed your advice and consult a trusted workshop for a thorough assessment. It appears a comprehensive evaluation is warranted to accurately pinpoint the underlying cause. Indeed the problem was the AC compressor, it was replaced and now the air conditioning works fine.
