So, the thermal switch was the culprit for your BMW? Is that something I can easily check myself, or does it require special tools? I'm not very mechanically inclined, but I'm willing to try simple things before heading to the shop.

While you might be able to locate the thermal switch, testing it properly often requires some diagnostic tools. Considering your description, and the fan noise, I'd strongly suggest getting it professionally diagnosed. It could be the fan motor, the switch, or even something else in the engine cooling system. Save yourself the headache and potential further damage.

Thanks for the advice! I took it to the shop and you were right, it was a defective speed sensor causing the radiator fan not to work properly. The repair cost me around 250€, I appreciate the help!

Sounds familiar. I had a similar issue with my old BMW: engine overheating and check engine light. It turned out to be a faulty thermal switch causing the fan motor not to kick in when needed. Listen for unusual fan noise too. It could be the radiator fan struggling. Don't ignore it!
