My 2004 Mercedes CLK Diesel audio system has gone silent I have checked the volume and auxiliary input but there is no audio output Could a defective bass speaker be the cause My car has 161609 km

It could be a few things Have you checked the fuses Has any recent work been done that might have disturbed the wiring A defective speaker is possible, but I'd rule out simpler issues first Was there any sound distortion or crackling before it went completely silent

I checked the fuses and they seem fine No recent work has been done I did notice some crackling and popping sounds coming from the bass speaker a few weeks ago Could that be a sign of a defective speaker

Crackling and popping definitely points towards a failing speaker, especially if it's the bass driver It's likely the voice coil is damaged Given the age of the car, it's not uncommon It's best to get it checked at a workshop to confirm They can test the speaker directly and rule out any amp issues, though that's less likely given your symptoms

I took your advice and brought my car to a workshop As you suspected, the bass speaker was indeed defective They replaced it for 280€, and now the audio system is working perfectly again I appreciate your expertise
