Thanks for the quick reply. When you say vacuum leak, where should I look? Also, if the EGR valve is faulty, is there a risk to the catalytic converter?

Check the hoses connected to the EGR valve and intake manifold for cracks or looseness. A bad EGR valve can cause the catalytic converter to overheat over time because of unburnt fuel. I would visit a workshop to replace the EGR valve.

Thanks for the insights and advice. It seems a workshop visit is needed. The repair cost was 355€. I appreciate the help.

Yeah, your symptoms sound familiar. I had a similar issue with my CLK. Check for a vacuum leak around the EGR valve first. That hissing noise could be a clue. You might need a new EGR valve assembly. A faulty EGR valve can affect vehicle emissions.
