Summary of the thread
A 2003 Mercedes G Klasse with a gasoline engine experienced a check engine light and increased fuel consumption. Oil sludge? How did you figure that out? Was it definitely the VANOS solenoid? I'm not comfortable tearing into the engine myself.

It was the VANOS solenoid. A mechanic diagnosed it. If you're not experienced I'd take it to a workshop. Could save you problems.

Thanks, I took it to a mechanic and you were right, it was the VANOS solenoid. They mentioned a faulty valve or a power supply issue as possibilities. The repair cost 250€. Thanks for the advice!

Check engine light and high fuel consumption? I had a similar issue with my old BMW 5 series. Oil sludge was messing with the timing chain.
