Mercedes G Klasse diesel transfer case problem

Transfer case issues with my 2008 Mercedes G Klasse diesel at around 296427 km I've noticed the gearbox slipping and generally shifting uncleanly I suspect defective gears in the transfer case due to oil wear or general mechanical wear Has anyone encountered similar problems Could an oil change potentially alleviate the issue or is it likely a more serious gear wear problem

I have a G Klasse too, though I'm uncertain about the production year I think I encountered something that sounds oddly similar some time ago The vehicle began exhibiting some rather unusual shifting behavior, and I was quite concerned From what I remember, a mechanic mentioned something about the transfer case and potential oil wear issues Have you explored the possibility of inspecting the oil condition in the transfer case My assumption would be that it is worth a check, but I am not sure

Thanks for the reply When you had the issue, was it primarily noticeable during specific gear changes or under particular driving conditions And do you recall if the mechanic performed just an oil change, or was there actual component replacement involved Trying to gauge the severity of what I might be facing Also, do you have an estimate of your repair costs

Regarding your question, it was most evident during shifts between lower gears, especially when accelerating As for the repair, the mechanic initially hoped an oil change would suffice, but upon closer inspection, they found significant gear wear within the transfer case Ultimately, they recommended replacing some components Considering your symptoms are similar, I would personally advise taking it to a trusted workshop for a thorough diagnosis I do not remember the costs, but I think that you should get a proper assessment

Appreciate the additional information It confirms my suspicion about potential gear wear I took it to a workshop and they confirmed defective gears The transfer case needed some work and the total bill was 330€ Thanks again for sharing your experience; it helped me narrow down the problem
