Mercedes GLA Diesel Engine Issue Resolved
Summary of the thread
A 2018 Mercedes GLA with a diesel engine was experiencing jerking during acceleration, stalling at idle, rough running, and a strong exhaust smell, accompanied by a check engine light. The error memory indicated a fault related to the intake manifold. Possible causes included a defective intake manifold sensor or a vacuum leak, which could affect engine performance and manifold pressure. The issue was resolved by repairing the defective intake manifold, resulting in smooth engine operation and the resolution of the error.

Thank you for your assessment. If the intake manifold is leaking, would this also explain the strong exhaust smell, and could it potentially damage other components, such as the manifold sensor?

Yes, a leaking intake manifold can contribute to a strong exhaust smell, as unburnt fuel and exhaust gases may escape. While a leak itself is unlikely to directly damage the manifold sensor, the inaccurate readings caused by the leak can negatively impact engine performance and potentially lead to further issues. I recommend a workshop visit to diagnose the cause.

I appreciate your expertise. I took the vehicle to a workshop. It turned out the intake manifold was indeed defective due to scorching. The repair, including parts and labor, cost 1180€. The engine now runs smoothly, and the error has been resolved.

The symptoms you describe suggest a potential issue with the intake manifold. A leaking intake manifold, possibly due to scorching, would indeed cause jerking during acceleration, rough engine running, and reduced engine power. A vacuum leak could also affect manifold pressure readings and trigger the check engine light. It is advisable to check the manifold gasket for leaks.
