Mercedes ML Engine Issues

My 2006 Mercedes ML with a gasoline engine is giving me trouble. It has 270802 km. The check engine light is on. I suspect the EGR valve because I'm experiencing power loss, rough engine running, and smoke during acceleration. Fuel consumption is up, and it feels jerky when accelerating. There's also a loud hissing noise during acceleration, like a vacuum leak. Could this be a bad EGR valve? I'm worried about catalytic converter damage.

Sounds like EGR valve issues. I had similar symptoms on my ML: check engine light, rough idle, hesitation. A faulty EGR valve can cause all sorts of problems. Have you looked for any obvious vacuum leaks around the valve itself? A leak there could definitely cause the hissing you're hearing.

I'm not really sure how to check for vacuum leaks around the EGR valve. Is there a particular method, or should I just be looking for obvious cracks or disconnected hoses? Also, if it is the EGR valve, is it something I can tackle myself, or am I better off just taking it to a shop?

Visual inspection for cracked hoses is a start. But honestly, with those symptoms, and the potential for further damage to the catalytic converter, I would suggest going to a trusted workshop. They have the tools and experience to properly diagnose and replace the EGR valve. It will cost around 355€.

Okay, thanks for the advice. I was hoping to avoid a mechanic, but you're right, I don't want to risk damaging anything else. I'll book it in to get the EGR valve replaced. Hopefully, that'll sort everything out. Thanks again!
