Mercedes ML Stalling at Idle

My 2000 Mercedes ML with a gasoline engine has about 287546 km. The check engine light is on, and the error code points to the idle air control valve. It stalls at idle. Could a really dirty air intake cause this?

I have an ML too, and this sounds familiar. Stalling and the check engine light are a pain. Did you check the air intake? I'm no expert, but maybe a dirty mass airflow sensor could mess with the idle. Worth a look before assuming it's the idle air control valve.

About the mass airflow sensor, do you think it could cause the engine to stall completely, or just affect the idle speed? Did cleaning the air intake fix your similar issue?

I'm not positive it would cause complete stalling, but a bad MAF sensor can throw off the idle and trigger the check engine light. My intake was pretty dirty, but the stalling didn't totally stop until I had the idle air control valve checked. They said the valve was bad, so maybe get yours diagnosed properly?

Thanks for the help. Based on what you said, I'll get a technician to check it out. A local shop quoted about 425€ to replace the idle air control valve and clean the air intake. Thanks for your help.
