Mercedes ML transmission fault

My 2006 Mercedes ML with a diesel engine has a transmission fault. The engine warning light is on, and there's an error code related to the transmission oil pressure sensor. It sometimes goes into emergency mode and shifts roughly, even making grinding noises. Could a faulty pressure gauge be the problem?

I had similar issues with my ML. Check your gearbox oil level first. A low oil level can trigger the pressure switch and cause those symptoms. It's the simplest thing to check before assuming the sensor fault is real. Is the transmission warning light on as well?

Where exactly is the transmission oil level dipstick located? I've looked, but I'm not sure I'm checking the correct one. And if the oil level is fine, could it still be just the pressure sensor causing all this?

There isn't a dipstick for the transmission fluid. It needs to be checked by removing a drain plug and seeing if it weeps out when the engine is running. If you are not familiar with this it might be best to get it checked at a workshop. If the oil level is correct, then it could be the sensor.

Thanks for the advice. I took it to a workshop and you were right, the oil level was too low. They topped it up and cleared the error. Cost me 365€. Appreciate the help.
