Mercedes R Klasse Electronic Parking Brake Fault
Summary of the thread
A 2005 Mercedes R Klasse diesel exhibited an electronic parking brake fault, with the handbrake unresponsive and a warning light on the dashboard. The issue was suspected to be related to the electric motor in the brake caliper. After considering potential causes like a faulty brake switch, the vehicle was taken to a workshop where the faulty electric motor in the caliper was replaced, resolving the issue.

Good point about the brake switch. Where is it located, and can I test it without special tools? Or am I wrong to think it's something simple?

I can't say exactly where it is without seeing it. Testing could be hard without the right tools. Given the error code and the motor suspicion, it probably needs a workshop visit. They can pinpoint the problem with the electronic brake system.

Thanks for the input. I took it to a workshop. The electric motor in the calliper was faulty. Replaced it, cleared the error, and it's working again. The 505€ hurt, but at least the vehicle safety is sorted. Thanks for the nudge towards a proper diagnosis.

Sounds annoying. Electric parking brakes are a pain. Have you checked the brake switch itself? Maybe a faulty switch is sending the wrong signals to the brake control module. Seems like the simplest thing to check first.
