Mercedes R Klasse Hands Free Microphone Issue

My 2005 Mercedes R Klasse with a gasoline engine has a hands-free microphone that stopped working. I can't make calls through the car's system. A diagnostic shows an error related to the audio input. It might be a defective infotainment system, possibly a Bluetooth or wireless connection problem affecting speech recognition. Has anyone else experienced this?

Summary of the thread

A 2005 Mercedes R Klasse owner experienced a malfunction with the hands-free microphone, preventing calls through the car's system. Diagnostics indicated an audio input error, potentially linked to a defective infotainment system or Bluetooth connection issue. Suggestions included checking Bluetooth settings and performing a reset by disconnecting the battery. Ultimately, a mechanic confirmed the infotainment system was faulty, and replacing it resolved the issue.

I understand your frustration. I had a similar problem with my old Volvo S60. The speech recognition and audio input went haywire. It turned out to be a problem with the Bluetooth module itself. It wasn't providing a stable wireless connection, so the system couldn't process any voice recognition commands. I'd check the Bluetooth settings and see if a simple reset helps.

Thanks for the suggestion! Where is the Bluetooth module located in your Volvo? I'm wondering if the location might be similar in my R Klasse. When you say 'reset,' do you mean disconnecting the battery or is there a specific procedure? I am not sure where to look for it in my car's system, and any pointers would be appreciated.

I am unable to give you the exact location for your Mercedes, as the architecture will differ. In my case, the Volvo had a separate module in the trunk. When I say 'reset,' I mean disconnecting the battery for about 30 minutes. However, given the potential cost you mentioned, I'd suggest taking it to a qualified mechanic. They can properly diagnose the issue and determine if it's a Bluetooth issue, wireless connection problem, or something else entirely. It might save you money in the long run.

I appreciate the advice! I took it to a shop as you suggested. It was indeed a faulty infotainment system, as suspected. They replaced it, and everything is working perfectly again. It cost 815€, but at least the hands-free calling and speech recognition are back. Thanks again for your help!
