Mercedes SL ABS Light Issue

My ABS light is on. I have a 2008 Mercedes SL with a gasoline engine and 264681 km. The ABS lamp is constantly lit, and the ABS system isn't working. The diagnostic scan says there's a fault with the lateral acceleration sensor. The workshop thinks the control unit is defective. Had this happen? Safety warning is on, is it still safe to drive?

Sounds familiar. I had a similar issue on my SL, though not sure of the year. Check your wheel alignment first, but it does sound like the lateral sensor or yaw rate sensor. A diagnostic scan should pinpoint it. If the control unit is faulty that's gonna sting the wallet.

Wheel alignment? Really? I thought the lateral sensor was the main culprit. How did wheel alignment affect yours? The shop is quoting around 1000€ for the control unit replacement. I am kinda hoping it's not that.

Alignment can sometimes throw those sensors off, but yeah, sounds like the sensor itself. If the diagnostic scan is pointing directly at the lateral sensor and they are saying affected control unit defective, the price sounds about right for the parts and labor. Best to get it sorted, especially with that safety warning.

Ugh, you were right. Bit the bullet and had the lateral sensor and control unit replaced. Cost me around 1000€ just like you said it would. Everything is back to normal now. Thanks for the advice!
