Mercedes SL Exhaust Issue

My 2014 Mercedes SL with a gasoline engine has started playing up. The check engine light is on and I'm experiencing reduced engine power plus increased fuel consumption. It's done 22829 km. The OBD flagged a faulty exhaust heat sensor. I suspect an exhaust leak is causing temperature fluctuation. Has anyone encountered anything similar?

That sounds familiar. Had the same thing on my old BMW 3 Series. Check engine light and reduced power. It was a bad car exhaust temperature sensor. Exhaust leaks can mess with the engine management system. Is the temperature fluctuation massive or just a bit erratic?

The temperature fluctuation is more erratic than massive. Not consistently high just bouncing around more than usual. Did your BMW throw any other codes or just the exhaust temperature sensor one? How long did you drive it like that before getting it sorted?

Just the temperature sensor code as far as I remember. I wouldn't push it. Reduced power and increased fuel consumption are just the start. You could damage the catalytic converter. Get it booked in. Cost me about 265€ to sort on the BMW so expect something similar.

Booked it in and you were spot on. Leak in the exhaust system causing the temperature sensor to act up. New heat sensor fitted and exhaust leak sorted for 265€. Running like a dream again. Thanks for the help!
