Mercedes V Klasse Headlight Problem

My 2001 Mercedes V Klasse with a gasoline engine is showing a headlight malfunction. The error is stored in the error memory, and the warning light is on in the speedometer. I've noticed the low beam shines too far down, or sometimes too far up. I suspect it might be a defective servomotor in the headlight, could this be the cause? I've checked the electrical connectors, but they seem fine. What could be the issue with the adaptive headlights and beam adjustment of the lighting system?

Sounds familiar. Had a similar issue with my BMW 5 series, although the symptoms were slightly different. The adaptive headlight system went haywire. Did you check the voltage at the servomotor connector? Is the signal reaching the headlight unit? Perhaps the headlight range control unit itself is faulty.

I haven't checked the voltage at the servomotor connector yet. Where exactly should I measure, and what values should I be looking for? Do you think it's more likely to be the servomotor or the control unit?

On my BMW, the voltage fluctuation was the key. A steady 12V signal should be present when the system is trying to adjust. Erratic readings pointed towards the control unit struggling to send the correct commands. But without proper diagnostic tools, it's difficult to pinpoint. Considering the potential complexity of the adaptive lighting system, and the cost, I'd advise a workshop visit for a proper diagnosis before throwing parts at it.

Thanks for the advice. I took it to the workshop, and you were right. It was indeed a defective servomotor in the headlight. The repair cost me 1040€. I appreciate your help!
