Mercedes Viano diesel DPF issue
Summary of the thread
A 2011 Mercedes Viano diesel is experiencing issues with the diesel particulate filter (DPF), indicated by a warning light, reduced power, and smoke emissions. The problem is suspected to be related to a faulty exhaust back pressure sensor, which affects the DPF regeneration process. A similar case was resolved by replacing the defective sensor, and professional diagnostic services are recommended to confirm and address the issue.

Thanks for the reply. Fuel consumption seems normal. No recent work done on the exhaust system, so that's a no. What exactly did you do to fix your issue?

Following the appearance of these symptoms, I consulted with a certified Mercedes-Benz technician. Diagnostic testing confirmed a faulty exhaust back pressure sensor. Replacement of the component rectified the issue. Given the symptoms and your assessment, coupled with my prior experience, it is advisable to seek professional diagnostic services. A malfunctioning sensor can impede DPF regeneration and potentially cause further complications within the exhaust system, leading to more extensive and costly repairs. The DPF is a critical component of your vehicle's emission control system.

Cheers for the advice. Took it to a workshop and it was indeed the exhaust back pressure sensor. Cost me 245€ to get it sorted. No more smoke or warning lights.

I understand you are experiencing difficulties with your diesel particulate filter. I have a Mercedes Vito, and I encountered similar symptoms some time ago: reduced engine power, smoke during acceleration, and a strong exhaust odor, accompanied by the DPF warning. It is plausible that the exhaust back pressure sensor is defective, as you mentioned. This sensor provides critical data to the engine control unit (ECU) which regulates the DPF regeneration process. Have you observed any changes in fuel consumption? Furthermore, has the vehicle undergone any recent maintenance on its exhaust system?
