Mercedes Viano smoking exhaust back pressure sensor issue
Summary of the thread
A 2006 diesel Mercedes Viano was experiencing issues with a warning light and excessive smoke during acceleration. Diagnostics indicated a problem with the exhaust back pressure sensor and a failure in the DPF regeneration process. The issue was likely due to a defective sensor or possibly a wiring problem. After replacing the faulty sensor, the vehicle's emissions returned to normal, resolving the problem.

Thanks for the quick response! When you say check the wiring, is that something I can easily do myself? I'm not a pro mechanic. Or should I just take it to a workshop?

You can visually inspect the wiring for any obvious damage – frayed wires, loose connections etc. But if you're not comfortable with car maintenance, I'd advise taking it to a workshop. They can pinpoint the problem properly and replace the sensor. Could save you a headache.

Thanks for the advice! I took it to a local garage and you were spot on – exhaust back pressure sensor was bad. Replaced it, and now it's all good, emissions are back within limits. Cost me about what I expected. Thanks!

Sounds familiar. I had a similar problem with my Vito. Same symptoms: smoke, light on the dash, DPF issues. The pressure sensor was the culprit. Check the wiring to the sensor as well. Sometimes it's just a bad connection.
