Mercedes X Klasse transmission issue

My 2018 Mercedes X Klasse with a diesel engine is exhibiting some rather concerning symptoms. At 173593 km, the check engine light and transmission indicator light illuminate intermittently. Gear shifts are frequently unclean, and slippage is evident. Grinding noises are also present during shifting. Diagnostic scans reveal an error stored in the memory, pointing toward a potential automatic transmission converter fault, specifically the torque converter lock-up clutch defective. I suspect the automatic transmission converter is defective. Could this be an engine surge issue related to the lock-up clutch? Has anyone else experienced similar clutch problems? Estimated repair cost is around 2120€.

I'm sorry to hear you are experiencing issues with your X Klasse. I also drive the same car model and I encountered a comparable situation not long ago. The symptoms you describe sound very familiar. I would agree that it does sound like a converter fault within the auto transmission. Has the issue been present for long or is it something that developed quickly?

The issue has developed gradually over the past few weeks, initially with subtle shifts and only recently escalating to the more pronounced symptoms. When you had this issue, did the grinding noises occur consistently or only under specific conditions, such as during cold starts or particular gear changes? Did you also experience any engine surge or fluctuation in RPMs?

In my experience, the grinding noises were most noticeable during upshifts, especially when the auto transmission was still cold. I did not observe engine surge, but the fluctuation in RPMs was definitely present, mirroring the unclean shifts you described. Given your description, I would strongly advise that you seek professional diagnosis, I took mine to a reputable workshop as soon as I noticed those issues.

Thank you for sharing your experiences. Your insights are invaluable and confirm my suspicions. I have already scheduled an appointment with a trusted mechanic. The diagnosis confirmed the defective torque converter lock-up clutch, necessitating a replacement of the automatic transmission converter. Appreciate your time!
