Micra diesel particulate filter issue
Summary of the thread
A 2000 Nissan Micra diesel is experiencing reduced engine power, a warning light, smoke during acceleration, and a strong exhaust smell, potentially indicating a diesel particulate filter (DPF) issue. A similar case suggested that a defective exhaust back pressure sensor could cause these symptoms. The recommended solution is to have a mechanic check and possibly replace the sensor, which resolved the issue in this instance.

Thanks! Could you tell me about the regeneration process you tried? And were your symptoms exactly the same, including the smoke on acceleration and the warning light?

I didn't force a regeneration myself; I took it to a workshop and they ran a diagnostic. Turned out the exhaust back pressure sensor was defective. The symptoms were pretty much the same as yours though. The workshop said that a faulty sensor can cause all sorts of issues with the DPF. I'd suggest having a mechanic check the sensor before you spend too much time trying other things.

Thanks a lot for sharing that. I took your advice and brought the car to a workshop. The sensor was defective and needed replacement. The repair cost was 245€. Your input really helped get it sorted quickly.

Hey, I have a Micra too, though I can't remember the year. Your problems sound very familiar! I had similar symptoms – warning light, sluggishness, and the exhaust smell was awful. Have you tried forcing a DPF regeneration? It might be worth a shot before getting worried about pressure sensors. Might be worth a try.
