Mini Cabrio brake pedal feedback

I come to you today with a query regarding my 2013 Mini Cabrio, which has now traveled a fair distance. I have recently noticed a rather disconcerting sensation emanating from the brake pedal. It feels unusual, almost as if something is resisting or pulsating. Given my diagnostic assessment, I am inclined to suspect undervoltage within the vehicle's electrical system. The brake pads appear to be in acceptable condition, and I am not experiencing squeaky brakes, but I am open to suggestions before I take it in for service.

Summary of the thread

A 2013 Mini Cabrio owner experienced unusual feedback from the brake pedal, suspecting undervoltage in the vehicle's electrical system as the cause. The issue was linked to the ABS being affected by low voltage, leading to the strange pedal sensation. Suggestions included checking for air in the brake lines, inspecting brake rotors, and considering the impact of electrical issues on braking systems. Ultimately, the problem was resolved by replacing the brake rotors and shoes, confirming the initial suspicion of electrical interference.

Did this summary help you solve your problem?

Strange feedback, huh? Could be a few things. First thought is air in the lines, but you'd probably notice spongy brakes then. Check your brake rotors for wear, and maybe have the hydraulic brakes inspected. Squeaky brakes can also point to worn brake shoes. Hope that helps!

Thanks for the suggestions! Air in the lines I understand, but 'undervoltage' affecting the pedal, as I initially thought, seems a bit odd. How could electrical issues cause such a problem with the braking system? I was hoping there was nothing wrong with the brake calipers.

Ah, I see you've considered undervoltage. Modern cars have complex systems. ABS and other electronic brake assists can be affected by low voltage, which in turn gives that weird feedback. I'd still inspect those brake rotors closely, but honestly? With those symptoms and your suspicion, a visit to a knowledgeable workshop is probably the best move. They can properly diagnose the electrical system and the hydraulic brakes.

I appreciate the input. It seems that undervoltage was indeed the culprit, affecting the ABS and causing the strange pedal feedback. I ended up getting new brake rotors and brake shoes, but the brake calipers were still in good shape. Total cost came to around 240€.
