Mini Cabrio Diesel Engine Issues

I am writing to report an issue with my 2015 Mini Cabrio diesel, which has clocked some kilometers. I have been experiencing difficulty starting the engine, and it has a tendency to stall when idling. Furthermore, the check engine light has illuminated. Preliminary diagnostics suggest a defective camshaft sensor. I suspect the encoder wheel on the camshafts may be faulty, leading to incorrect camshaft position readings. Could this sensor failure be the primary cause of these symptoms?

I drive a Mini Cooper, and I had similar symptoms a while back. Rough starts, stalling at idle, and the check engine light were all present. Have you checked the crankshaft sensor in addition to the camshaft sensor? Sometimes a fault with the crankshaft sensor can mimic camshaft sensor failure, messing up the ignition timing and confusing the engine control unit.

That is interesting. I had not considered the crankshaft sensor. Could a faulty crankshaft sensor genuinely cause the engine to stall, even if the camshaft sensor is the primary issue? What was the final diagnosis in your case?

In my case, the camshaft sensor was indeed the culprit. The crankshaft sensor was fine. Given your symptoms and the diagnostic code pointing to the camshaft sensor, it seems likely that is your problem too. However, without proper diagnostic tools, it is difficult to be 100% certain. I would recommend taking it to a qualified mechanic for a thorough inspection.

I appreciate your insights. The Mini is now back from the workshop. The diagnosis confirmed a defective camshaft sensor, likely caused by a faulty encoder wheel. The repair cost came to 695€. Now it starts perfectly and the engine runs smoothly. Thank you again for your help.
