Mini Clubman Coolant Loss and Check Engine Light
Summary of the thread
A 2020 Mini Clubman owner experienced a recurring coolant loss and a check engine light, with diagnostics indicating a potential defect in a cable or plug connection. Concerns included possible engine overheating and a compromised head gasket. Suggestions included checking for radiator hose leaks and considering air pockets in the cooling system. Ultimately, the issue was resolved by repairing a defective plug connection, aligning with the initial diagnostic suggestion.

Thank you for your response. When you mention 'air pockets,' could you elaborate on the nature of this phenomenon and its potential impact on the cooling system's performance? Furthermore, what would constitute a 'bigger problem' in this context?

By air pockets, I mean air trapped in the cooling system after a coolant change. They can cause the level in the reservoir to fluctuate. A bigger problem could be a failing water pump or, worst case scenario, head gasket issues, though that's rare. Since you are seeing an error code and the garage suggested a bad connection, I would take it in. 95€ isn't a bad price to resolve it.

I must extend my gratitude for your insights. As it turned out, you were spot on. The workshop identified a defective plug connection, and the repair cost was precisely within the anticipated range. The system is now functioning optimally. Thank you once again for your assistance.

Low coolant is never a good sign. I had a similar issue with my Clubman. First thing to check is obvious but important: radiator hoses. Any visible leaks? Also, when was the last time you checked the coolant level? You might want to keep an eye on it for a few days after topping it off. Air pockets can sometimes cause the level to drop initially after a refill. If it keeps dropping, then you might have a bigger problem.
