Mini Clubman Fog Sensor Problems

I'm about to tear my hair out! My 2020 Mini Clubman is throwing a hissy fit. The fog sensor seems to be the culprit. I'm getting an error stored in the memory, the air conditioning refuses to switch on, the spray nozzles are frozen even when it's not that cold, and the mirror heating is MIA. My repair manual is pointing towards a defective cable or plug connection for the sensor. Anyone experienced something similar? Before I start ripping apart the dashboard, any wisdom to share? This visibility problem is becoming a real pain, especially with the current weather!

That sounds suspiciously like the issue I had with my Audi a few years back. Identical symptoms: climate control refusing to engage, heated mirrors dead, and windshield fogging up like crazy. In my case, it turned out to be a faulty ambient temperature sensor. Have you checked the sensor's readings through an OBD scanner or any diagnostic tool? Is the system attempting any sensor calibration?

Interesting! Ambient temperature sensor, you say? I haven't specifically checked that one. I was focusing on the fog sensor itself, given the error code. Where is the ambient temperature sensor located on your Audi? I'm wondering if the Mini's location is similar and if a visual inspection might reveal something obvious before I start digging deeper. I can check the sensor readings. What values should I expect?

Indeed. The Audi's ambient temperature sensor was located behind the front bumper. However, given that your diagnostic points to the fog sensor, it's wise to stick with that. Considering your symptoms and the error code, a defective connection is highly probable. If you are not comfortable doing it yourself, I would suggest visiting a workshop. In the end, I had to take the Audi to the shop, and they sorted it out quickly.

Just got the Mini back. You were spot on about the connection. The workshop found a corroded plug on the fog sensor harness. Cleaned it up, applied some dielectric grease, and everything's working again. Air conditioning is blowing cold, mirror heating is toasty, and those pesky spray nozzles are ready for winter. Thanks again for the insight!
