Mini Cooper Overheating Issue

Help! My 2009 Mini Cooper is overheating. The check engine light came on and I'm worried. It only has kilometers on it! Could it be the radiator fan? I'm thinking maybe the speed sensor is bad. What do you think?

Overheating in a Mini Cooper can be tricky. I had a similar issue with my Cooper. First, have you checked the coolant level? Also, is the fan blade obstructed in any way? Does the fan motor start at all, even at high engine temperature? A faulty thermal switch could also be the culprit. Ignoring this can lead to significant engine damage. Let me know what you find.

Thanks! Coolant level is fine. I cannot see any obstruction of the fan blade. The fan motor does not seem to start at all, even when the engine is really hot and the check engine light is on. Where is the thermal switch located? What does it do?

Based on what you've described, it does sound like the fan motor or related components, such as the thermal switch, are the problem, especially since the fan is not running at all. The thermal switch is part of the temperature control system and tells the fan to turn on at a specific temperature. It's usually located near the radiator. Given your limited technical knowledge, I would suggest taking it to a qualified workshop for diagnosis and repair.

Just wanted to say thanks for the help. Took my Mini Cooper to a shop and they confirmed it was the fan motor and also a defective speed sensor. Repair cost me 250€. Appreciate the advice!
