Mini One automatic gearbox issues

I'm experiencing some rather concerning issues with the automatic gearbox in my 2006 Mini One. The paddle shifters are unresponsive, and the gearbox is slipping and shifting rather uncleanly. Furthermore, I'm hearing some grinding noises during gear changes. The paddle shifters' response is also noticeably slow, and the gearbox seems to be stuck in emergency mode. An error is stored in the error memory, which I suspect points to a defective transmission control unit. Has anyone encountered similar transmission problems, and could a faulty control module be the likely culprit?

I also drive a Mini One with an automatic gearbox and had similar transmission problems a while back. The paddle shifters were acting up, and the gearbox was slipping. Have you checked the transmission fluid level? That might be a simple thing to rule out. Also, did the error memory indicate any specific fault codes related to the transmission control?

Thanks for the quick reply! The transmission fluid level seems fine, and I did check the error memory. It's throwing a code indicating a defective transmission control unit. Did you have the same error code when you experienced the transmission problems? Was it also the control module in your case? Did you also hear grinding noises when shifting gears? How was the response of the paddle shifters?

Yep, sounds exactly like what happened to my car. The error codes were the same, and the grinding noises were definitely there. It was indeed the transmission control. To be honest, I tried a few things myself, but in the end, I had to take it to a workshop. They replaced the transmission control module, and that solved the problem. I would suggest getting it checked out by a professional who specializes in automatic gearboxes and automotive ECU systems.

Thanks for sharing your experience, it definitely helped me narrow down the issue. I took the Mini One to a workshop, and after diagnosis, they confirmed it was indeed a faulty transmission control module. They replaced the control module, recoded the automotive ECU, and now the automatic gearbox shifts smoothly again. It set me back around 1000€, but it's worth it to have the car running properly. I appreciate the advice!
