Mini One battery sensor issue

My 2008 Mini One is showing some concerning symptoms. The engine is sluggish to start, and the lights are weak and sometimes flicker. I suspect it might be a bad battery sensor. Has anyone encountered similar issues? I've read that a defective sensor can cause these problems, as it misreads the battery's state of charge, leading to low voltage delivery. I'm trying to get ahead of any major issues with some preemptive battery maintenance.

I had a similar issue with my Vauxhall a while back, although the brand is different, the symptoms sound familiar. Weak starts and flickering lights often point to battery issues, but it's good you're already suspecting the battery sensor. Have you done any basic battery testing to confirm low voltage?

I haven't yet performed extensive battery testing myself beyond a visual inspection. What kind of testing are you referring to specifically? Are there particular voltage levels I should be looking for to confirm a defective battery sensor on my Mini One? Is a standard multimeter sufficient?

Yes, a standard multimeter should be sufficient for basic battery voltage checks. However, since you suspect the battery sensor, it might be best to have a workshop perform a more comprehensive battery testing. They can usually pinpoint the sensor issue more accurately. In my case, a faulty sensor was indeed the culprit, leading to inaccurate voltage readings and eventual battery drain. I would suggest to visit a workshop for a diagnosis.

Just wanted to close the loop on this. It was indeed the battery sensor. I ended up taking it to a workshop, and they confirmed the diagnosis with their own battery testing equipment. The battery voltage was fluctuating, which they attributed to the faulty sensor providing incorrect readings. Replaced the sensor for 315€ parts and labor. Car starts perfectly now, and the lights are steady. Thanks for the advice!
