Mini One Diesel Gearbox Issue

Yeah, consequential faults can happen. Basically, a fault in one system (like ABS) can trigger errors in other systems that rely on the same data or control module. It's not super common, but definitely possible. If the ABS is sending incorrect signals, it could definitely mess with the gearbox control and cause the symptoms you're seeing. You should probably have them take a look at the ABS module, or maybe take it to a workshop for a second opinion.

The powertrain malfunction light is always on now. I had the codes read, and there were a few related to the gearbox but nothing super specific. The mechanic mentioned something about consequential faults? I'm not sure what he meant by that. Is it possible the ABS could really mess with the gearbox like that?

Just wanted to update you. Turns out the ABS control module was throwing some weird signals that put the transfer case into limp home mode. Diagnostic trouble codes didn't exactly point to it directly, which is why I was confused. But once they sorted the ABS, the powertrain malfunction disappeared and the gearbox is shifting smoothly again. Absolutely zero cost to repair. Thanks for your help!

That sounds rough. Powertrain malfunction warnings can be a pain. Is the warning light constantly on, or does it come and go? Have you had the diagnostic trouble codes read? A slipping gearbox could be a few things, like maybe a torque converter issue. What exactly did they say about the ABS system being involved?
