Mini Paceman bypass valve error and overheating

I have encountered a perplexing problem with my 2016 Mini Paceman. At 65093 km, an error related to the bypass valve is stored in the error memory. Concurrently, the engine is overheating. I suspect the bypass valve issue might be a consequential error. I would appreciate some insights before consulting a mechanic.

Interesting issue. A bypass valve malfunction on your Mini Paceman could stem from a few things. Since you're seeing engine overheating, that's a key symptom. Overheating can absolutely trigger secondary errors related to the bypass valve, especially if the engine management system is trying to compensate. Have you noticed any changes in fuel efficiency or any unusual noises? Also, is there any noticeable power loss during acceleration? The vacuum system that controls the bypass valve is quite sensitive; a small leak anywhere in that system can cause havoc, a bit like a domino effect. Can you share any other details about the conditions when the error occurs?

Fuel efficiency seems normal, and I haven't detected any unusual noises, although there might be a slight power loss uphill. Regarding the vacuum system, is there a straightforward way to check for leaks without specialized equipment?

Okay, a slight power loss uphill combined with the overheating definitely points towards a vacuum leak or a sensor issue affecting the bypass valve's operation. Unfortunately, checking the vacuum system thoroughly often requires specialized tools like a smoke tester to pinpoint small leaks. Think of it like trying to find a tiny hole in a balloon – you can try listening for it, but a targeted approach is usually more effective. Given the engine overheating symptom, I'd strongly advise against driving it extensively until it's properly diagnosed. Continuing to drive with engine overheating could lead to more serious and costly damage. It's probably best to have a workshop take a look.

I appreciate the detailed explanation. It appears you were spot on. After diagnostics, the garage confirmed a faulty sensor was triggering the bypass valve error and causing the engine overheating. The repair was covered, so no cost incurred.
